ReMARKable Palate #153: Cachaça - The Spirit of Brazil

This week, we talk about the National Spirit of Brazil, Cachaça. I attended a party hosted by Sagatiba, a premium Brazilian Cachaça, and had the chance to sit down with Jared Brown and Anistatia Miller, cocktail, spirits, and liquor experts who happen to be married to each other! You heard them recently on All You Can Eat #52, speaking with our mutual friend Don Genova. Well today, they give us the benefit of their vast knowledge and research into the history of Cachaça and other New World spirits.

Day 5: Capoeira

21 Sep 2008 In: Brazil

I had my first classes on Monday. Beginning Portuguese is really the beginning—”What is your name? My name is…”—but you gotta start somewhere. I had a fair share of nodding-off during the day because I simply didn’t get enough sleep. In the early morning, before we had any classes, we were instructed to take a placement test. Just in case you needed more proof that you were a bum beginner… Really, though, it’s more for the people who can speak some Spanish already, since that augments your reading abilities while doing very little for your conversational skills.

Classes were all right, but afterwards we headed to a nearby capoeira school, Academia Mandinga, for a lecture and demonstration of capoeira. Again, I fell asleep during the lecture, which was droningly translated from Portuguese by the man who is going to be our TA for the culture class. But then we were invited to participate in some warm-ups and drills, and then in the capoeira roda (circle). Throwing kicks was pretty tiring; I haven’t done any of these exercises for a long time. In the roda, I seemed to forget all of the skills I’d ever learned, but it was still fun to play with the locals, as well as people from the program who’d had training before. It was definitely interesting to see capoeira of a different bent; the songs, the moves, the rhythm—all were entirely different from what I’d gotten used to in the Capoeira Brasil satellite class at UCLA.

I definitely want to join an academy as soon as possible. I mean, I’m in Brazil—I have to. But I did talk to one or two people from the program who didn’t see the merits of capoeira at all and intended to have nothing to do with it, preferring Afro-Brazilian dance. Well, different strokes for different folks! I just know that last night’s roda awakened something inside me that had been dormant for too long a while.

Coral Reefs are Important

20 Sep 2008 In: Sustainable Tourism

guia-verde-imagebolg.jpg

Along of the cost of Mexican Caribbean lies a magnificent and complex reef system, which extends from the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula to the Bay Islands in Honduras. This natural wonder is the second largest barrier reef in the world and is called the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

Though they cover less than 1% of th earth surface, coral reefs shelter an incredible variety of life. Reefs are home of higher density of species thayn any other marine environmental.

For many coastal communities, healthy reefs are key to sustaining traditional fishing activities. Coral reefs also good for business: diving tours, fishing trips, hotels, restaurants and other establishments based near reefs provide jobs and are important income to local economies.

As the Mexican Caribbean coastline develops into a popular destination, unsustainable human activities are inflicting a great strain in its fragile reefs. Activities such as the destruction of mangroves and seagrass beds can increase sedimentation in near shore waters and coral reefs. The over-harvesting of kay marine spacies and destrcutive fishing practices can upset the delicade balance of reef life in the region.Touching, finning into, and standing on reefs damages corals. The release of waste water into the ocean is harmful to corals. In addition, fertilzers from golf courses and agriculture favor algal growth which can smother coral.

These activities further damage reefs already weakened by factors such as hurricanes and climate change.

How to Help
1. Do not step on, touch or harvest coral.
2. Avoid picking up and disturbing pieces of coral.
3. Do not stir up the sandy ocean floor.
4. Do not drop ancors onto coral reef.
5. Do not buy or sell coral, turtle or conch jewerly.
6. Do not spear fish.
7. Use biodegradable sun-block.
8. Help keep the beach and ocean clean.
9. Do not eat prohibited or out of seson fish or seafood.

Diving and Snorkel in Mexican Caribbean

16 Sep 2008 In: Activities

The Mexican state of Quintana Roo is located at the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and is world-wide known as one of the best destinies for diving in the Caribbean. The area is recognized among divers of the United States of America, Canada and Europe.

At the south of Cancun is located the second bigger coral reef barrier in the world, as well considered the biggest in the North hemisphere, it extends along the coast of Honduras with some open zones; besides, around Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and Contoy islands, there are special coralline formations, the very famous reef walls of Palancar in Cozumel or Manchones at Isla Mujeres.
On other side, along all the Yucatan Peninsula exist underground rivers that, in the case of the Mayan Riviera, have been explored in their majority and are opened to the public who appreciate cave and cenotes diving, as well as open sea and inland diving, this makes this zone a unique destiny due to all the available possibilities.

Don´t miss this unique experience!! more information http://www.cancuntravel.com/scuba.asp
