Day 2: BRASIL

12 Oct 2008 In: Korean Celebrities

Greetings from Salvador, Bahia, on the eastern coast of Brazil! This town is absolutely beautiful, and I love it here already. I spent about 24 hours in transit, hopping from San Francisco to Atlanta to Rio de Janeiro and finally to Salvador, but the weather couldn’t be better and my host family makes me squee. The first day was rickety—I don’t know any Portuguese, and most of what came out was “ah, em, er”—but I owe today to my Lonely Planet phrasebook, which, although not perfect, has been doing a swell job of saving my ass. Somehow I managed to lose a hefty amount of money on the first day (I owe it to my own stupidity and lack of diligence), but I am not going to let that get in the way of my experience here, no matter how much I suspect that my hotel roommates are culpable.

Brazilians are very laid-back and generally pleasant, friendly people… although being foreign does attract lots of remarks (if you’re Asian, that means calls of “arigatou” in between kissy noises?) and the culture is ten times more affectionate, forward, and sexual than the States’. It’s going to take a little getting used to, but it’s no big deal.

I’ve made quite a few new friends in the program, and going out on the town with them was quite fun and very chill. Although I don’t think that even with two girlfriends I’d like to venture out much after dark (and it does get dark early here, being so close to the equator), having 5+ guys with us made me feel a bit better. I realized very quickly that knowing no Portuguese will be my ruin, and I’m pretty much immersed in it here; there are hardly any tourists. However, there are plenty of people in the same boat, so I don’t feel very behind. And today, I had my first Portuguese “conversation” with my host brother, Lazaro (15), and his two friends, Weiler and Ricardo. When I couldn’t tell what exactly they were trying to say, spelling it out on paper cleared things up. And actually, sketching doodles seemed to explain anything that gestures couldn’t. They asked me if it was far from San Francisco to LA. I drew the US, marked SF and LA, and told them I had friends here: in Boston. Them: “EHHH?! LONGE!!!” I also found out that not only are laptops ridiculously expensive—US $3000—but a PS3 ($500) costs the equivalent of US $1300 here. Ah, thank goodness for people who like to play games, who can tell me things that I’m interested in!

Also: Brazil loves Obama! And a mosquito bit me on the lip!

Caribbean Cruise

For sometime now the number of people deciding on a Caribbean cruise vacation has been on the increase; the affordability of these cruise liners makes it possible for even younger people to experience them. What more could you want, with a complete program of daily activities on board the cruise liner, entertainment every evening and the wonderful beaches and islands of the Caribbean. Whilst short breaks are available, perhaps over a weekend period, the vast majority of passengers sail for seven days and sometimes in excess of fourteen but depends on how much you are willing to spend.

Whilst this type of vacation has become widespread each vacationer has diverse needs so there are many different packages available as it is a time for unwinding, enjoyment and revitalization. If anything, you will have a hard time keeping up with everything that you can possibly do on a cruise liner. It is always a pleasant use of your time to see what vacations on ships are available and see what choice of packages there are so why not start at the local travel operator for some advice.

As there are so many islands over quit a large area, Caribbean cruises arrange for only certain ones like Jamaica, Antigua, Bermuda or Bahamas; these islands will get a visit for each type of package that has been arranged so your job is to find one that matches the islands you want to visit. If your ideal cruise vacation includes partying by the beach or the deck pool, even at a disco well then choose a cruise with plenty of activities. Some Caribbean cruise liner companies actually produce virtual tours and other information on DVD’s which can be collected from your travel agent or ordered online.

The main difference with this type of vacation is the number of changes of clothing you take with you as there is a greater opportunity to dress for evening functions. These are ideal opportunities to dress up which many of us do not get the chance to do these days so the ladies will want at least two evening gowns and the men will require a tuxedo. There are also plenty of activities if you take your children along on a cruise vacation and they will probably burn off all their energy by the time the evening has ended.

A wide variety of activities are planned for them so that you can spend the time to do what you like; trained staff will look after them so you can put your mind at ease while you are enjoying and relaxing with your spouse. For those of you that would prefer a child free vacation, that too is available so you can cruise around the Caribbean islands without having to worry about children.

There is no end to what you can actually request on your cruise liner vacation so if you have just got married or are celebrating your fiftieth wedding anniversary, something special can be arranged. The whole idea of a Caribbean cruise vacation is that you enjoy yourself and just let go for however long you are on board because it may be some time before you go again!

Want to become a millionaire overnight? Move to the Dominican Republic! Okay, that may be somewhat of an exaggeration on my part. But the truth is, if only because of the fact that you are a “Gringo” (i.e. American, Canadian, European, Asian, etc.) the second your soles hit Dominican earth, the locals will treat you as if you are filthy-stinking-rolling-in-dollar-bills rich.

This has its advantages and disadvantages, here in the DR as anywhere else. But in all honesty, new laws have recently been put in place by the Dominican congress that could quite literally make it possible for you to live like royalty on a very modest monthly pension and/or investment dividend check (by American and European standards).

In an effort to attract foreign retirees and investors, Dominican politicians have put together a plan that many Baby Boomers and even Gen-Xers will find hard to dismiss. One of the most alluring and surprising aspects of this mulit-faceted plan to make the Dominican Republic the Numero Uno Caribbean retirement destination is the fact that there is no age barrier…people of any age are eligible! As long as you can provide proof of a passive, steady income from interest dividends of at least $2,000 per month (as well as an additional $250 per spouse and/or child), you can enjoy the many benefits of relocating to the DR.

Such seductive tax incentives include:

  • Zero Tax regarding the title transfer taxes when you purchase your first home or apartment
  • Zero Tax on interest income or dividends derived from investments abroad or local
  • 50% off any annual real estate tax owed (FYI: property owners do not pay annual property taxes on any real estate worth RD$5 Million Pesos/US$150,000 or less, but you must pay tax on the prorated value above that amount)
  • 50% OFF capital gains taxes of income from you receive as a shareholder of a company not involved in any commercial or industrial activities (such as from a holding company)
  • No (zero, zilch, nada) import tax on your personal belongings that you bring into the country as a new resident. You, of course, are responsible to pay all of the shipping costs associated with moving overseas, but in previous years the taxes were so steep that it was advisable to sell off everything you owned and buy everything new down here…a real drag economically and emotionally.

Of course, you would also enjoy the pleasures of nearly-perfect year-round weather, gorgeous tropical beaches, mountains and river valleys, a stable democratic government, low-cost yet high-quality health and dental care, affordable domestic help, high-interest financial products offered by the local banks, as well as good infrastructure and internet connectivity throughout the country.

Whether it’s affordable beach town living or the lifestyle of a country estate you seek, the Dominican Republic is happy to oblige. For example, the once tiny resort town of Juan Dolio on the southern coast of the DR is flourishing into a lovely little boomtown. New high-rise seaside apartment buildings and condominium complexes are sprouting up like coconut palms, and selling-out before they’re even built. New foreign-born residents are enjoying the many local restaurants, two top class golf and country clubs, a short drive to the city for mall-shopping and Gringo delights like TGI Fridays and movies in English.

Opportunities abound in this up-and-coming tropical paradise. The gradual implementation of DR-CAFTA trade initiatives promise lower prices on goods of American origin, as well as the inevitable influx of US businesses sure to make any Gringo feel a lot less homesick. With inflation and a credit/mortgage crisis threatening the ability of millions of Americans to retire with dignity, it is easy to see why the Dominican Republic is gaining ground as more than just a vacation destination. The DR is set to become “Home Sweet Home” to the world’s smartest retirees…of all ages.
